Presentation of Scholarship

A Dubbo College Senior Campus student has been awarded a scholarship jointly funded by OEC and Dubbo Local Aboriginal Land Council. The $1,000 scholarship will assist Year 11 student Chelsea Wood to complete her studies and achieve her Higher School Certificate.

Senior Campus principal Richard Skinner said Chelsea was a deserving student with great leadership potential.

“It is very encouraging to see a locally initiated scholarship go to Chelsea because she will not only be able to complete her schooling here at Dubbo College, but she will also be able to work on further developing her leadership skills,” he said.

“For Senior Campus the scholarship is another indication of the strength of the commitment of the local Dubbo community to assist our young Indigenous students to achieve their full potential. When the community supports a student to fully engage in their education and set important goals, the resulting improvement in educational outcomes can be enormous.”

OEC Chief Executive Officer Ian Stanford said the inaugural OEC & DLALC Scholarship was announced to mark the opening of OEC House last year.

“The opening of our new office facilities represented a new beginning for our organisation and a step in the right direction for helping Indigenous people chart their future,” he said. “That’s why we created this scholarship in partnership with the local Land Council.”

Congratulating Chelsea on her achievement, Dubbo Local Aboriginal Land Council members Paul Carr and Seth Toomey said the scholarship was designed to provide opportunities for a student who might not otherwise have the chance to finish or further their secondary education.

“This scholarship will give local Indigenous secondary students like Chelsea the chance to continue their education and ensure they leave school armed with their Higher School Certificate and keen to pursue further education or employment opportunities,” Mr Carr said.
